One of Ostrava's dominant landmarks, it was completed and its grand opening took place in 1986. Since its completion, it has become an important sporting and cultural centre, and a popular place for holding national, European and world championships, concerts performed by top stars, sporting tournaments and other events. The arena has undergone reconstruction work on several occasions during its existence.
The hall is the home of the HC VÍTKOVICE RIDERA ice hockey team.
It has been carried the name OSTRAVAR ARÉNA since 2016.
The OSTRAVAR ARENA is currently one of the sporting facilities owned by VÍTKOVICE ARÉNA, a.s. With a capacity for as many as 12,500 spectators, it is one of the Czech Republic's largest multifunctional halls, and thanks to cutting edge technical equipment, a variable interior layout and a wide range of offered services, it can provide ideal facilities for even the most demanding events.
The most significant sports events held in the arena include the 2004 and 2015 Ice Hockey World Championships, the 2017 European Figure Skating Championships, the 1994 and 2020 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, Davis Cup and Fed Cup matches, and the 2010 Women’s Basketball World Cup.
Cultural events mainly include concerts performed by foreign artists such as Sting, Bryan Adams, Peter Gabriel, Bobby McFerrin, José Carreras, José Cura, Joe Cocker, Roxette, Rammstein, Kiss, the Scorpions, Deep Purple, Manowar, Judas Priest, Slayer, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, and Jethro Tull. As for the Czech and Slovak music scene, Karel Gott, Lucie Bílá, Kabát, Chinaski, Kryštof, Buty, Elán, Paĺo Habera & Team, Richard Müller and many other artists have performed there. The arena has also hosted performances of the musicals Hair, Děti Ráje (Children of Paradise), Mýdlový princ (The Soap Prince), Angelika, the shows Disney On Ice, Mrazík (Jack Frost), Popelka na ledě (Cinderella on Ice), Sněhurka na ledě (Snow White on Ice), Holiday On Ice, and others.
